Used for airborne geophysical survey – the transmitter-receiver loop in the foreground is part of the VTEM (Versatile Time-domain Electro Magnetic) system, used to detect variations in the Earth’s magnetic field to find minerals below the ground surface. A magnetometer is attached to the line above the transmitter-receiver loop – this can be seen resting on the ground to the right of the helicopter. The helicopter carries this loop and magentometer as a sling load. Photo © Geoff Carberry

Has had its vertical tail and most of the survey equipment removed, apart from the tail ‘stinger’. Previously called the “TEMPEST”, it was used for Time domain ElectroMagnetic (TEM) surveys (hence the registration VH-TEM). These surveys detect variations in the Earth’s electromagnetic fields caused by minerals and substances below the ground surface. VH-TEM made its first flight on 31 March 1978, with test registration ECT-103 and was displayed at the Farnborough Air Show in September 1978.
