The Aviation Association of Western Australia Inc (AAWA) and Perth Airport arranged an airside visit for nearly 30 AAWA members (less than half of AAWA’s total members) at Perth Airport on 30 July 2018.
The visit was arranged to coincide with the return of Qantas’ Boeing 747s to Perth, where it was temporarily operating domestic flights between Sydney and Perth, due to a need to train more Boeing 737 pilots.
Qantas is gradually retiring their Boeing 747 from the fleet, with all to be gone by 2020.
Today’s service was operated by Boeing 747-438ER VH-OEF named ‘Sydney’, which wore Oneworld titles. It operated flight QF581 from Sydney, returning as QF582.

AAWA members completed security requirements then boarded a chartered bus to drive around the airport. All enthusiasts wore high-visibility vests and followed instructions from Perth Airport staff. Lasting from 12pm to 2:30pm, the airside tour included:
- Terminal 3
- Terminal 4
- Bay 914 (between Terminals 3 and 4 and runway 21/03); the group was allowed out of the bus (within a defined area) to photograph aircraft taxying, landing or taking off, including arrival of the Boeing 747-438ER VH-OEF of Qantas.
Informative commentary and safety/security supervision was provided by a Perth Airport Airside Operations Officer.
Channel 7 News sent a reporter to cover the return of the Qantas 747 to Perth and some AAWA members were interviewed.
AAWA members thoroughly enjoyed the visit and obeyed instructions.
