The ‘Thunderbird’ formation was a salute to students of number 251 Pilots’ Course who graduated as military aviators in a ceremony held the next day, on 22 June 2018 at RAAF Base Pearce, after their 38-week course with 2 Flying Training School (2FTS). The Thunderbird formation is also treated as a training activity for the student pilots. After taking off from RAAF Pearce, the aircraft gathered into their formation to the west of Gingin, before heading south west to pass over Rottnest Island at approximately 3.54pm, heading east over Fremantle at approximately 3.57pm, then head up the Swan River to pass over Perth city at 4.01pm, as seen here, north along the Swan Valley at 4.09pm before passing over RAAF Base Pearce for a flypast at 4:10pm.

Has had the survey equipment removed and seems to be getting prepared for sale. Previously called the “TEMPEST”, it was used for Time domain ElectroMagnetic (TEM) surveys (hence the registration VH-TEM). These surveys detect variations in the Earth’s electromagnetic fields caused by minerals and substances below the ground surface. VH-TEM made its first flight on 31 March 1978, with test registration ECT-103 and was displayed at the Farnborough Air Show in September 1978. Later EC-DHQ, VH-KDV, P2-CNP before being registered VH-TEM in 1988.

Built in 1998, this aircraft has not flown for several years. The Eagle was conceived by Western Australian inventors Neil Graham and his father Deryck Graham. Graham Swannell and John Roncz were then engaged to design the aircraft. The single-seat prototype Eagle X-P1 was a taildragger based on the Rutan Quickie and first flown in 1984. The Eagle X-TS (Two Seat) had tricycle gear and first flew in 1988, and this was later produced in Western Australia and marketed as the Eagle 150. Eagle Aircraft entered liquidation in 1989 and development slowed, so the aircraft was not certified until 1993. Eagle Aircraft was then purchased by a Malaysian company and production was moved from Fremantle to Malaysia in 1999, where the type was produced by Composites Technology Research Malaysia (CTRM).

Acquired new in July 2012 for $874,000 to replace a Cessna 182, POLAIR 64 was later modified to carry surveillance and communications equipment, including an advanced mapping system allowed real time footage to be overlayed with mapping data such as street names, assisting with accurately plotting offender and police movements; an infra-red and motion detection video camera turret (in the underfuselage fairing) to help detect vehicles and people. It flies at 6,000ft, covering larger surveillance areas and has an endurance of 3 hours but only costs 20% of the cost of a helicopter. Following the modifications, the Airvan became operational in October 2016 and the total cost of the plane and equipment was $3.2 million.
