In 1935, it was shipped to Fremantle, WA for MacRobertson Miller Airlines (MMA), and was registered VH-USJ. It was based in Port Hedland and operated by MMA for Australian Aerial Medical Service (AAMS), and in 1941 was sold to them. AAMS later became the Flying Doctor Service (WA Section) Inc. It was sold in 1961 and was damaged in an accident in 1964. After a series of owners and locations awaiting rebuild, in 1996, it was shipped to New Zealand and re-built. It flew again on 22 November 2002, registered as ZK-USJ, but still wearing VH-USJ. It returned to Australia in 2003 and was again registered VH-USJ.

Built in 1950, and originally delivered to the Royal Air Force (UK) as WB677 on 16.8.1950. Sold 24.9.1956 at No.10 Maintenance Unit, Hullavington, UK. First registered in Australia on 21.11.1957 as VH-RHW by the Royal Aero Club of Western Australia, based at Maylands Aerodrome and then Perth Airport until sold in 1962. It went through a series of owners until purchased by Glen Caple in 1973.

This aircraft was delivered to the RAAF on 4 June 1975, using ferry registration ZK-EAA. It was allocated RAAF serial A19-038. It was sold on 21 June 1993 and registered VH-DPV, but has retained its RAAF “Fanta can” paint scheme, which also led to the type being nicknamed the “Plastic Parrot”.
The CT/4 was developed in 1972 by New Zealand Aerospace Industries from the Australian-designed and built Victa Aircruiser, which was based on the 1960s Victa Airtourer. Ironically, in 1967 Victa had to sell the manufacturing rights to AESL (later NZAI) in New Zealand due to lack of Australian Government support. Then in 1975, the RAAF ordered 51 CT/4A aircraft as a primary trainer.

Modified for electro magnetic geophysical survey work, now fitted with a new longer transmitter tail boom and some external reinforcement of the rear fuselage. It also has a square electromagnetic transmitter wire around the aircraft and a towable receiver under the fuselage, which is towed 95 metres behind and 75 metres below the aircraft. The aircraft was also converted from a standard Grand Caravan to a Texas Turbine Conversions Supervan 900, where the Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-114A was replaced by a more powerful Honeywell TPE331-12JR engine, and the 3-bladed prop is replaced by a 4-bladed prop.

Landing on runway 03 at 12:25 pm as VA9224 from Busselton. The Fokker 100s in Virgin’s fleet are in different configurations – this one has a left side galley service door, just ahead of the engine. Swissair was the first airline to order the Fokker 100 and their MD-80 fleet used a rear Economy Class galley which was accessed through a left-side rear service door, which also acted as an additional emergency exit. Swissair asked Fokker to configure the Fokker 100 the same way and Swissair even designed special Fokker 100 catering vehicles to use the tight space between the wing and left engine. Fokker also shortened the flap track of the left wing to make additional space available for this rear catering door. Guinness-Peat Aviaton Leasing ordered 150 more Fokker 100s in this configuration, which were used by a number of airlines. This one was originally delivered to TAM of Brazil. Photo © David Eyre
