This helicopter was written off when it crashed at Weir Road in Baskerville, in the hills northeast of Perth on 19 January 2013, whilst filming a news story. It is important to emphasise that this was the first crash suffered by Heliwest in 21 years of helicopter operations. The ATSB report stated:
“After hovering and manoeuvring at about 500 ft above ground level to allow the camera operator to record footage of a truck accident, the pilot conducted a right orbit to complete filming and depart the area. When the pilot turned to the right to commence the orbit, the helicopter was exposed to a crosswind from the left while at an airspeed around the 30-knots threshold value for susceptibility to loss of tail rotor effectiveness (LTE), precipitating an unanticipated right yaw and temporary loss of control. 90 minutes (60 minutes with a 30-minute reserve) and it can cruise at 85 knots
It is very light, weighing 380 kg empty. Electricity costs $3 per hour (compared to $30/hour for petrol engine). The aircraft costed $150,000 and is equipped with a Ballistic Recovery Parachute.
