Qantas Group has restructured its 99-aircraft Airbus A320neo order, which was placed in 2011, to include 18 of the longer range A321neoLRs for Jetstar.
The aircraft will be delivered from mid-2020 through to the end of 2022, enabling Jetstar to replace its oldest A320s on domestic and international services, and freeing up their Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners for other routes.
The A321neoLR is 15% more fuel efficient than the A320 and can have a range of up to 4,000 nautical miles (7,400 km). Although not currently planned, this could theoretically enable direct flights between Perth and Manila (Philippines) or perhaps Perth to Chennai (India).
In October 2011, Qantas Group ordered 99 Airbus A320neo (new engine option) family aircraft, including 54 A320neo and 45 A321neo, delivered from 2019, with the CFM LEAP-1A engine being selected in 2012.
This order has been amended to a roughly equal mix of 186-seat A320neos and 232-seat A321LR neos.
