Perth will become the first Australian destination for the new, larger Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner from 9 May 2018, when Singapore Airlines introduce the type on the SQ215/SQ216 night services betwene Singapore and Perth.
The airline currently operates four daily flights between the two cities, two with the Airbus A330-300 in the night and early morning, and two with the Boeing 777-200ER.
Singapore Airlines’ intends to use the Boeing 787-10 mainly within South East Asia. It is configured with 337 seats, 36 business class seats and 301 economy class (in a 3-3-3 layout), replacing the night time SQ215/216 service, which currently uses a 285-seat Airbus A330-300, providing a 5% capacity increase (38,000 seats) on the Perth – Singapore route, subject to regulatory approvals.
Singapore Airlines is the 787-10 launch customer and has firm orders for 30 Boeing 787-10s, plus a letter of intent for 19 more. The first aircraft, 9V-SCA is due for delivery in late March 2018. The new type will replace older Airbus A330-300s and Boeing 777-200ERs.
The 787-10 will be introduced into service on short flights to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur for crew familiarisation, then on Singapore-Osaka and Singapore-Perth routes from May 2018.
The 787-10 is 5.5m longer than the 787-9, and is able to fly 6,430 nautical miles (11,900 kilometres).
Perth Airport CEO Kevin Brown said “Singapore is an incredibly important market for Western Australia and is currently our third largest in-bound tourist market.
“Singapore Airlines has a long and proud record of linking Perth with Singapore – a relationship which has delivered benefits for more than 50 years.”
