Qantas Boeing 747-438ER, VH-OEE, today operated a repatriation flight to evacuate Australian citizens from the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the Coronavirus (later named COVID-19) originated.
A volunteer Qantas crew (14 cabin staff and two pilots) were on board when the aircraft departed Sydney to Hong Kong and Wuhan on 2 February as QF6031.
The repatriation flight QF6032 departed Wuhan at 7:45 am local time, flying a circuitous route (possibly due to difficulty obtaining overflight clearance) south east over the Moluccas, before heading southwest to Learmonth (near Exmouth, Western Australia), landing just after 4 pm WST.
On board were 243 Australians, including 89 children. Precautions including being physically separated from the volunteer crew and changing face masks every hour.
On arrival at Learmonth, their health was checked before they were flown to Christmas Island for 14 days quarantine.
VH-OEE departed Learmonth to return to its base in Sydney.
