The Western Australian Government has informed the City of Busselton that $9.5 million in State funding for the planned expansion of Busselton-Margaret River airport terminal will not be released until after the three-year trial of direct flights from Melbourne by Jetstar.
The City of Busselton wanted to expedite the plans, to stimulate the local economy and tourism, and to encourage more interstate and international passenger/freight services.
However, now that the terminal expansion is on hold, the City instead wish to redirect the funding towards a theatre and convention centre project. The State Government supports redirecting the funding, but tourism operators and some politicians do not.
