A rare visitor today was a German Air Force (Luftwaffe) Airbus A400M-180 Atlas transport aircraft, serial 54+37 (MSN 113) of LTG 62 (German: Lufttransportgeschwader 62 = Air Transport Wing 62) arrived at Perth Airport just prior to 5pm on 6 March 2023.
The A400 departed Wunstorf Air Base in Lower Saxony, Germany during February 2023, flying westwards via the USA and south Pacific, making five overnight stops including Miami (arrived 19 February), and Nadi (Fiji), arriving at Avalon, Victoria on 24 February 2023. The main purpose of the trip was to participate in the Australian International Air Show at Avalon from 28 February to 5 March 2023.
The day after the Air Show, 54+37 departed Avalon to Perth, arriving runway 24 at 4:44pm using call sign ‘GERMAN AIR FORCE 062’.
On 8 March 2023, 54+37 departed Perth to Subang, Malaysia, again using the callsign ‘GERMAN AIR FORCE 062’.
Germany is the largest operator of the A400, with 53 aircraft, 13 of which are part of a multinational airlift wing.
The A400 is in service in the UK, France, Spain, and Malaysia, and has been ordered by Indonesia and Kazakhstan.
