Georgia Guard retired their CH54’s in 1993. 68-18435 also held the world record for helicopter altitude for many years at 35,000 feet. Two Sikorsky test pilots climbed until both engines flamed out. I was the property book officer and maintenance officer/test pilot who turned over two skycranes to erickson, one being 435, hence the “Georgia Peach” nickname.
Hi Dan,
Many thanks for sharing that interesting snippet about N154AC ‘Georgia Peach’.
She is again based here in Western Australia for the 2016-17 bushfire season and there are some recent pics under December 2016 in the Aircraft Photos section of our website.
Kind Regards,
David
While these may create ‘good television’, what an utterly crazy waste of fire fighting dollars given the hideous cost of operating these Ericksons.
Little wonder the FESA budget went up by 10.4% in the latest State budget. It would all be less horrible if they were reasonably effective firefighting tools which it seems they are not.
Putting the same dollars into fuel reduction burning would be far more cost effective fire protection.
