This was Qantas’ first 737-800 to enter service, in January 2002. It was originally built for American Airlines as N979AN, but with the US airline industry downturn after the September 11, 2001 attacks, American no longer needed additional capacity. The unrelated collapse of Ansett Airlines in Australia during the same month required Qantas to add capacity rapidly, and it took over American’s delivery positions. In October 1989, it was registered ZS-MJS to Skyvan Services and operated by Executive Aerospace Ltd in South Africa. It was delivered to Perth Airport as ZS-MJS in 1996, and was flown to Jandakot for extensive modifications to survey configuration. It was registered on 12 December 1996 as VH-WGT to World Geoscience Corporation Ltd, which was taken over by Fugro Airborne Surveys Pty Ltd in 2000.

The Il-76TD-90VD was developed specially for Volga-Dnepr cargo company, and is derived from the earlier Il-76TD, but fitted with Aviadvigatel PS-90 engines and a partial glass cockpit. Compared to the Il-76TD, this -90VD version is fully compliant with ICAO Chapter 4 noise standards (the old version was only Chapter 2 compliant), has longer range (of 4600km versus 3,800km), better fuel consumption and airfield performance, and over 60% more reliable. Volga-Dnepr has four of these in their fleet, together with a number of larger Antonov An-124 aircraft.
RA-76503 was originally rolled out of the factory in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, wearing primer and partial registration “76503” on 30 September 2011, and made its first flight on 15 October 2011. It was painted as RA-76503 in Volga-Dnepr Airlines colours by 23 November 2011.
