Built in 1998, this aircraft has not flown for years. The Eagle X-TS was conceived by Western Australian inventors Neil Graham and his father Deryck Graham. Graham Swannell and John Roncz were then engaged to design the aircraft. The single-seat prototype Eagle X-P1 was a taildragger based on the Rutan Quickie and first flown in 1984. The Eagle X-TS (Two Seat) had tricycle gear and first flew in 1988, and this was later produced in Western Australia and marketed as the Eagle 150. Eagle Aircraft entered liquidation in 1989 and development slowed, so the aircraft was not certified until 1993. Eagle Aircraft was then purchased by a Malaysian company and production was moved from Fremantle to Malaysia in 1999, where the type was produced by Composites Technology Research Malaysia (CTRM).

Though based on the World War Two Yakovlev Yak-3U, this example is based on a Yak-11 airframe and was built in Romania in 2005, powered by a Pratt and Whitney R-2000 radial engine. It was registered N46463 to William E Whiteside, in California in 2005, and was used in the Reno Air Races with the name ‘Steadfast’. In late 2013, it was shipped to Australia and has been under rebuild in the AeroJacks hangar since November 2013. It was registered in Australia on 24 December 2013 as VH-YOV, but still carries its US registration.

Recently returned from a 12-month, 500 hour survey in Vietnam, on behalf of the Natural Resources and Environment Corporation, under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and Vietnam Air Services Co (VASCO). The survey used aerial photography and laser scanning of high points in order to build high precision terrain model, as part of a study into climate change.

This aircraft has recently been converted from a standard Grand Caravan to a Texas Turbine Conversions Supervan 900, where the previous Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-114A is replaced by a Honeywell TPE331-12JR engine, and the 3-bladed prop is replaced by a 4-bladed prop. This conversion delivers a 40% reduction in takeoff distance, improved rate of climb, 14 knots faster on the same fuel burn (or 14% less fuel at the same airspeed), 7000 hour time between overhauls (compared to 3600 hours with the original engine), and a lower hourly operating cost. The aircraft is converted for geophysical survey, and equipped with a magnetometer tail ‘stinger’.

This aircraft was once operated by University Flying Club. The Royal Aero Club has started to refurbish its Cessna A152 fleet to near new condition, and VH-UWC seems to be in desperate need of refurbishment.

This was recently purchased by the Royal Aero Club from RACWA member Ian Robertson at a bargain price, and it has 12,000 flying hours remaining on the wings. It joins another P.68B, VH-WZG, in the RACWA fleet. Behind VH-IXE is another RACWA P.68, VH-PNT, which has been with the Club since new in 1976, but is now withdrawn from use after accruing 22,350 flying hours. VH-PNT has only 800 flying hours left before the aircraft would require new engines and new wings, and the last inspection revealed corrosion, requiring the spar caps to be replaced. It is not economic to refurbish VH-PNT, so it is being stripped of spare parts.

This flew Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea) to Cairns and Cloncurry in June 2014, before later arriving at Jandakot. It has been to Jandakot in the past, and has had its prop removed. the aircraft is used for geophysical surveys, detecting variations in the Earth’s magnetic field caused by mineral bodies, using a magnetometer tail “stinger” boom.
