Firefighting helicopters were called to assist ground-based fire crews in battling a bushfire that threatened lives and homes in Gnangara, in Perth’s northern suburbs.
With temperatures reaching 39 degrees Celsius, a fire started on Sydney Road, Gnangara on the morning of 9 November 2019, prompting an Emergency Warning and evacuation of residents in this semi-rural area.
Four helicopters of McDermott Aviation were involved in the firefighting operations:
P2-MSA / HELITACK 671 Bell 214B-1 BigLifter (2,700 Litres belly tank) VH-SMI / HELITACK 674 Bell 214B-1 BigLifter (2,700 Litres belly tank) VH-YUQ / FIREBIRD 623 Eurocopter AS355F-1 Twin Squirrel N97MD / FIREBIRD 661 Eurocopter AS365 N3 Dauphin 2 They refilled with water from a lake at Warradale Park in nearby Landsdale, and refuelled at the sports oval before returning to base at Jandakot.
The fire was under control by early afternoon.

VH-SMI had been fighting a bush fire near Joyce Road in Gnangara, and are arriving to refuel, before returning to base at Jandakot. It is fitted with an Isolair ‘Tsunami” Belly Tank, with 2,700 Litres capacity. Built in 1976, ex LN-OSW, P2-OSW, LN-OSW, C-GTWI.
