Hornets at RAAF Base Pearce for military exercises: February 2020

A number of McDonnell-Douglas F/A-18A Hornets and one F/A-18B Hornet of 75 Squadron based at RAAF Base Tindal in the Northern Territory were temporarily deployed to RAAF Base Pearce, north of Perth, Western Australia from 23 February to 6 March 2020 for Exercise Phoenix Black and Exercise Nigrum Pugio.

The Hornets provided air support for exercises with Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) personnel. The exercises ran included practice bombing and gunnery in the first week and explosive ordnance expended in the second week, at Lancelin Range.

Six F/A-18As (A21-13, A21-16, A21-20, A21-26, A21-56 and A21-57)  plus one F/A-18B (A21-111) arrived at Pearce on 21 February 2020 from Tindal via Broome. Each aircraft was carrying an SUU-20 practice bomb dispenser and LITENING AT targeting pod.

They were joined on 24 February 2020 by A21-24 and A21-50 (low-visibility 77 Squadron markings), which arrived from the Eastern States.

As the older F/A-18A and B ‘Classic’ Hornets are gradually being retired, the fleet is being consolidated, so some aircraft still had markings from their previous units.

  • A21-16: Yellow and black ‘2 OCU 75 Years 1942-2017’ markings and 27 combat mission markings on the nose. 
  • A21-20: Low-visibility 75 Squadron markings
  • A21-24: Low-visibility 75 Squadron markings (arrived 24 Feb 2020)
  • A21-26: No markings, dark green rudder
  • A21-50: Low-visibility 77 Squadron markings (arrived 24 Feb 2020)
  • A21-56: Low-visibility 2 OCU markings and 12 combat mission markings on the nose.
  • A21-57: Low-visibility 3 Squadron markings and 42 combat mission markings on the nose.
  • A21-111: Partial 2 OCU high visibility tail markings.

A21-111 McDonnell-Douglas F/A-18B Hornet (MSN 423/ATF-111) of 75 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, based at RAAF Base Tindal, NT, still with partial 2 OCU tail markings, at RAAF Base Pearce, Western Australia - 21 February 2020. Arriving from Tindal via Broome, for Exercise Phoenix Black and Exercise Nigrum Pugio. The Hornets provided air support for exercises with Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) personnel. The exercises ran from 23 February to 6 March 2020, with practice bombing and gunnery in the first week and explosive ordnance expended in the second week, at Lancelin Range. The aircraft is carrying an SUU-20 practice bomb dispenser and LITENING AT targeting pod. A21-111 was delivered to the RAAF on 4 November 1987.
