FGS Bayern (F217) is is a Brandenburg-class frigate of the German Navy, commissioned on 15 June 1996 and home-ported at Wilhelmshaven.
Bayern was on a six-month deployment to demonstrate Germany’s ongoing commitment to the Indo-Pacific and to defend the freedom of the sea and had trained with ships from Australia, Singapore, Japan and the United States. It visited Fremantle from 28 September to 5 October 2021.

The Bayern is armed with an OTO-Melara 76 mm/62Mk-75 multi-purpose naval gun, two Mk 49 launchers for 21 x RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missiles, a Mk 41 Mod 3 vertical launch system for 16 Sea Sparrow antiaircraft missiles, 8 Harpoon anti-ship missile launchers, four 324 mm torpedo tubes for Mk 46 torpedoes, and two Mauser BK-27 27 mm rapid-fire cannons.
Two Westland Super Lynx Mk.88A helicopters were aboard, 83+02 (on the flight deck) and 83+12 (inside the starboard hangar) from MFG-5, based at Nordholz.

Under fuselage harpoon on the left of photo, and cargo hook on the right. Once landed on deck, the pilot presses a button on the collective and the harpoon is extended hydraulically into the deck grid, a claw grabs onto the grid and pulls the aircraft downwards, holding it on deck.

83+12 was originally built as a Sea Lynx Mk.88 (MSN 272), first flown on 19 November 1982 as G-17-32 and delivered to the German Navy on 14 January 1983. By 2004, it had been converted to a Super Lynx Mk.88A and was allocated MSN 428.
A second Super Lynx (83+02) was outside on the flight deck, wearing nose art on its starboard side depicting Lemmy, the founder and lead singer of the rock band Motörhead.
FGS Bayern (F217) is is a Brandenburg-class frigate of the German Navy, commissioned on 15 June 1996 and home-ported at Wilhelmshaven. It was on a six-month deployment to demonstrate Germany’s ongoing commitment to the Indo-Pacific and to defend the freedom of the sea . The Bayern trained with ships from Australia, Singapore, Japan and the United States. It visited Fremantle from 28 September to 5 October 2021.
The last time a German Navy ship visited Sydney, Australia for the Bicentennial in 1988.
