VH-DED Rutan 33 VariEze ‘VariJet’ (MSN W91) owned by Geoffrey Danes, at Sport Aircraft Builders Club (SABC) Annual Fly-In, Serpentine Airfield – 27 October 2019. Built as a piston-powered VariEze by Geoff Danes and first flown on 12 September 1979, this was the second VariEze built in Australia. From around 2010, the aircraft was slowly converted to jet power, using a Turbomeca Palas, a centrifugal turbojet engine designed in France in 1950 to power light aircraft. Geoff made the first flight of the ‘VariJet’ with the jet engine one year ago, on 28 October 2018, at Jandakot Airport. Photo © David Eyre.
The Sport Aircraft Builders Club of WA Inc (SABC) hosted its Annual Fly-In at the SABC’s airfield at Serpentine Airfield, about an hour’s drive south of Perth, WA, on Sunday 27 October 2019.
Many aircraft at the Fly-In were built or restored at Serpentine, but the event also attracts visiting aircraft from other parts of Western Australia. This free event is an opportunity for SABC members to show the public the results of their many hours of effort in building or restoring aircraft.
Clear blue skies drew a large number of aircraft. While this is not an air display, a number of pilots flew solo or in formation. The hangars also contain surprises, with different aircraft under construction or restoration, and SABC members are happy to discuss their aircraft.
Sport Aircraft Builders Club of WA Inc (SABC)
The SABC was established in 1973 by a small group of members of the Sport Aircraft Association of Australia (SAAA). They leased land in Serpentine and formed the SABC to own and operate an airfield. Club members and their families cleared the scrub and over the years built two runways (a 910 metre bitumen runway with lights and a 600 metre grass runway), taxiways, hangars, a Clubhouse, and other facilities. SABC now has 300 members and over 130 aircraft at Serpentine, in more than 100 hangars.

VH-FPF Piper PA-18-150 Super Cub (MSN 18-7709153) owned by Sean Powell, Quairading, WA, at Sport Aircraft Builders Club (SABC) Annual Fly-In, Serpentine Airfield – 27 October 2019.
One of eight Super Cubs used by the Western Australian Government for forest patrol flights. These were introduced during October 1978 to September 1980, registered VH-FPF to FPK, VH-FPM and FPN – the “FP” in the registration standing for Forest Patrol. In the late 1980s, a local aircraft distributor proposed the Taylorcraft F-21B as a replacement, but this was not taken up. In 1994, the Eagle XTS was just starting production in WA, but had not yet found customers, so two aircraft were trialled, but this proved unsuccessful. In 1997, the Super Cubs were replaced with American Champion 8GCBC Scouts.
VH-FPF was the last Super Cub in WA Government service and was sold in June 2002 – VH-FPF was also the longest serving, being their first Super Cub delivered in October 1978. Beside fire spotting, the Super Cubs had also been used for search and rescue and scientific research. The Super Cub fleet flew more than 120,000 hours and covered around 20 million kilometres – equal to 25 return trips to the Moon. VH-FPF was built in 1977, ex N82405.

VH-KSM Stinson 108-1 Voyager (MSN 108-259) owned by Murray Kester, at SABC Annual Fly In, Serpentine Airfield – 27 October 2019.
Built in 1946, ex NC97259, N97259. First registered in Australia on 12 April 2010. The Stinson 108 was a popular aircraft produced by the Stinson division of Consolidated Vultee (Convair), from immediately after World War 2 until 1950. It was developed from the prewar Stinson Model 10A Voyager. In 1949, the Stinson division was bought by Piper Aircraft. 5,260 model 108s were built by Stinson, including 1,507 of the Model 108-1 seen here. A distinctive feature (visible on the right of this photo) was the partial leading edge slot installed on the wings and aligned with the ailerons on the trailing edge, ensuring that the portion of the wing containing the aileron remains unstalled at higher angles of attack, thus contributing to docile stall behavior.

VH-RQQ Eagle X-TS 150 (MSN 017) owned by Geoffrey Danes at the Sport Aircraft Builders Club (SABC) Annual Fly-In, Serpentine Airfield – 27 October 2019.
Built in 1998, this aircraft was one of two (the other was VH-RQI) which were originally operated by the Royal Queensland Aero Club, both of which were at Serpentine today.
The Eagle X-TS was conceived by Western Australian inventors Neil Graham and his father Deryck Graham. Graham Swannell and John Roncz were then engaged to design the aircraft. The single-seat prototype Eagle X-P1 was a taildragger based on the Rutan Quickie and first flown in 1984. The Eagle X-TS (Two Seat) had tricycle gear and first flew in 1988, and this was later produced and marketed as the Eagle 150.
Eagle Aircraft entered liquidation in 1989, and development slowed, so the aircraft was not certified until 1993. Eagle Aircraft was then purchased by a Malaysian company and production was moved from Fremantle to Malaysia in 1999, where the type was produced by Composites Technology Research Malaysia (CTRM).

VH-USC Silver Centenary (MSN 1) owned by Rodney Edwards, and , at Sport Aircraft Builders Club (SABC) Annual Fly-In, Serpentine Airfield – 27 October 2019.
This unique aircraft was designed and built in 1930 in Beverley, Western Australia, by people with no aircraft experience. Selby Ford sketched plans for the aircraft in chalk on the floor of the powerhouse at Beverley, WA, in 1928. Using this as a template, Ford and the local butcher Tom Shackle built the airframe from spruce and maple timber, with Tom’s sister sewing all the fabric for the aircraft. Selby Ford purchased an undamaged engine from an aircraft that crashed nearby during the WA Centenary Air Race in 1929. The plane was towed from the powerhouse along the main street of Beverley to Benson’s paddock, and most of the town turned out to watch the first flight on 1 July 1930. Captain C.H. Nesbitt of Western Air Services intended to taxi around the field, but was in the air within a few seconds. The aircraft handled so well that he flew for 25 minutes and then conducted some joyflights with Ford, Shackles and his sisters. Nesbitt later died flying another aircraft and the Silver Centenary did not fly again until April 1931. The CAA had restricted it to fly only within 5 km of Beverley, but Ford was unaware of this. He obtained permission to return the plane to Beverley in September 1931 and then applied to have the aircraft licensed. With no design documents, the CAA refused to grant a Certificate of Airworthiness. Special permission was granted to fly the aircraft to Narrogin and back to Beverley on 6 December 1931 and this was the Silver Centenary’s last flight for nearly 76 years. In 1933, Ford returned the plane to the powerhouse at Beverley, where it hung from the roof until after his death in 1963. In January 1964, the Silver Centenary was lowered from the roof of the powerhouse, cleaned up, and put into storage until completion of the Beverley Aviation Museum in 1967, where it was the main feature. In 2006, Rod Edwards, the grandson of Ford and current owner of the Silver Centenary, decided to restore the aircraft and apply for a Certificate of Airworthiness. On 12 July 2007, the aircraft was registered VH-USC and made its first post-restoration flight on 20 July 2007. In August 2007, the Silver Centenary finally received its Certificate of Airworthiness – 77 years after its first flights.
