Cobham Aviation Services Australia (formerly National Jet Systems), is headquartered in Adelaide, South Australia, but has a major hub and maintenance facility at Perth Airport, and other hubs at Cairns in Queensland and Darwin, NT. Cobham provides wide variety of services, including scheduled airline services, charter flights, FIFO (Fly In/Fly Out) operations for resources companies, freight services and wet leasing. The company is owned by Cobham PLC, a British based global group which was established in 1934 as Flight Refuelling Ltd (FRL) by Sir Alan Cobham - famous as a pioneer of long range flights and in-flight refuelling. The Australian arm of the Cobham company was formed as National Jet Systems in 1989, and began services in July 1990.
National Jet operated BAe 146 aircraft on contract to Australian Airlines under the Airlink brand with Australian Airlines colours, continuing this after Australian Airlines merged into Qantas in 1993 - the aircraft were painted in Qantas colours with Airlink titles. A subsidiary, National Jet Express, operates scheduled night freight services for Australian air Express, using BAe 146 freighters from Sydney. In 2005, National Jet was awarded the contract to operate former Impulse Airlines and Jetstar Airways Boeing 717 aircraft under the QantasLink brand, until 2012. The BAe 146s were repainted in National Jet colours as they came off Airlink operations.
National Jet was rebranded Cobham Aviation Services Australia in early 2009 as part of a global rebranding by its UK parent company Cobham plc. The company's legal identity as National Jet Express will still remain however the company would trade and operate its aircraft under the name Cobham.
On 19 October 2009, Cobham began operating public scheduled passenger services between Perth and Kambalda using Dash 8-300 aircraft under contract to Gold Fields St Ives Gold Mine, Avoca Resources Limited, Lanfranchi Nickel Mine and Norseman Gold Pty Ltd.
On 8 December 2009, Cobham announced that it had won the lucrative air services contract for Chevron Australia's Gorgon Project on Barrow Island. Cobham imported two BAE Systems Avro RJ100 aircraft for this contract, to be complemented by another three BAe 146/RJ aircraft on services between Perth and Barrow Island. Light aircraft from Karratha Flying Services will also be used where required. Cobham claimed that Barrow Island's history of bird strikes requires a four-engined aircraft in the event of engine loss, and the RJ100 can return to Perth using three engines if necessary. Also announced was a new terminal to meet strict quarantine protocols will be built at Cobham's Perth Airport base.
Another subsidiary, Surveillance Australia, operates a maritime surveillance "Coastwatch" contract on behalf of the Border Protection / Customs. See separate entry.

The Department of Environment and Conservation uses a fleet of American Champion 8GCBC Scout aircraft as fire spotter aircraft for forest patrols in the south-west of WA. They are based at Bunbury, Dwellingup and Manjimup, and fly across areas set each day according to the forecast fire weather conditions. The aircraft fly more hours during the hotter months (around 3,500 hours) due to the increased fire risk. They also supervise waterbombing operations in the south-west, relaying information to fire controllers regarding the fire's behaviour to assist in firefighting and ensuring the safety of fire crews.
In January 1972, The Conservator of Forests conducted the first fire spotter trials at Pemberton using a Cessna 150. The trial was so successful that the operation became permanent after only two weeks.
A fleet of eight Piper PA-18-150 Super Cubs was introduced from October 1978 - September 1980, the aircraft registered VH-FPF to FPK, VH-FPM & FPN - the "FP" in the registration standing for Forest Patrol. In 1987, the agency was renamed the Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM). In the late 1980s, a local aircraft distributor tried to convince CALM to acquire the Taylorcraft F-21B as a replacement for the Super Cubs, but this was not taken up.
In 1994, the Eagle XTS was just starting production in WA, but had not yet found customers. The WA Government trialled the aircraft in the forest patrol role, with CALM using two aircraft - VH-FPO (cn 0002) from January 1994, and VH-FPW (cn 005) from December 1994. The trial was not successful and the aircraft were not adopted, but stayed registered to CALM for a number of years afterwards.
In 1997, the Department began replacing the Super Cubs with American Champion 8GCBC Scouts. These were faster, had longer endurance, were more effective and cost-efficient. The first two aircraft were VH-FPL and VH-FPR in October 1997, and these were later joined by VH-CFH and VH-CFP in November 1998, VH-CFZ in December 1999, VH-CFX in January 2001, VH-CFD in July 2002, then VH-FMN and VH-FMR in November 2003. Most of these aircraft were sold off from October 2004 to August 2009, and replaced with newer Scouts. In August 2005, VH-VMS an American Champion 7GCBC Explorer was acquired, and stayed in the fleet until sold in July 2008. VH-CFD was written off in a landing accident at Albany on 5 March 2009, and later cancelled from the register.
In June 2002, the last Super Cub (VH-FPF) was finally withdrawn from service - this was also the longest serving, being their first Super Cub delivered in October 1978. Beside firespotting, the Super Cubs had also been used in search and rescue and scientific research. The Department calculated that the Super Cub fleet flew more than 120,000 hours and covered around 20 million kilometres - equal to 25 return trips to the Moon.
Each aircraft uses the callsign "SPOTTER" followed by their individual number, e.g. VH-DXM is "SPOTTER 643".

The Emergency Rescue Helicopter Service is managed by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services and funded by the State Government, with sponsorship from the RAC. The helicopter has been operating since 16 August 2003 under lease from CHC Helicopters Australia and is named "RAC Rescue". Between 2003 and 2009, the helicopter had undertaken more than 1,500 missions and saved hundreds of lives. RAC Rescue flies critical care specialists direct to an incident and then takes the injured directly to the hospital that can provide the best care. Its secondary role is hospital transfers for critically ill patients.
DFES also contracts in firebombing aircraft and helicopters for the fire season, using:

Dunn Aviation Australia is owned and operated by Neville Dunn, based at Ballidu, as was formed in 1963. The company provides aerial agricultural services and providing aircraft, pilots and support equipment for crop management, protection and improvement in agriculture, the mining industry and forestry, including emergency response service capability for a maritime oil spill, bushfire or wildfire disaster.
Aerial Firebombing & Water bombing includes use of the Air Tractor AT-802F, AT-602 and PZL M-18A Dromader for water and fire retardant dropping. Dunn Aviation has been contracted by FESA to provide firebombing aircraft for several years, deploying the aircraft to the southwest of WA during the hotter summer months. Its aircraft are also contracted out to other states to perform firebombing and agricultural duties.
Another AT-802A was delivered on 13 November 2010 (EC-JKF, which is to be registered VH-NIN). Two more are to be delivered to WA in early December 2010 and a third aircraft will be sent to the Eastern States.
When used for firefighting, the Air Tractor aircraft use the callsign "BOMBER", followed by the individual aircraft number - e.g. VH-NIA uses callsign "BOMBER 606".

Fugro is a Dutch multinational company headquartered in Leidschendam, the Netherlands. The company provides include survey, geotechnical, and geoscience services to oil, gas, mining and construction industries. The name "Fugro" is an acronym derived from "FUnderingstechnieken en GROndmechanica" which means "Consultancy for Foundation Techniques and Soil Mechanics". In Australia, the Fugro group includes three aviation companies - Fugro Airborne Survey, Fugro Spatial Solutions, and Fugro LADS.
Fugro LADS (Laser Airborne Depth Sounding) measures water depth in shallow coastal areas to assist with the development of nautical maps, oil and gas exploration and coastal environmental management - including assessing areas vulnerable to climate change and rising sea levels. Fugro purchased Tenix LADS from Tenix Pty Ltd in mid 2009. They have two aircraft: VH-LCL De Havilland Canada DHC-8-202Q Dash 8 (cn 492) based in Cairns, QLD under contract to the Royal Australian Navy; and VH-EWP Fokker F27-500 Friendship (cn 10534) - operated overseas on survey work. These aircraft do not usually operate in WA and are not listed here. The Dash 8 is operated and maintained by Surveillance Australia (see separate entry).
Fugro Airborne Survey formed in early 2000 through global mergers of several airborne geophysical survey companies, including WA-based companies World Geoscience Corporation, Aerodata, Geoterrex and Kevron Geophysics. The company conducts airborne geophysical surveys for mining, oil and gas, engineering and environmental management customers, using highly-modified aircraft to detect minerals and oil/gas below the surface of the Earth. The systems on the aircraft are used to measure the following:

Jetstar Airways Pty Ltd is a low-cost airline subsidiary of the Qantas Group, based in Melbourne.
Qantas acquired Impulse Airlines in 2001 and operated it under the QantasLink brand. With the demise of Ansett and growth of low-cost Virgin Blue Airlines, Qantas decided to create its own low-cost carrier, and re-launched Impulse Airlines under the Jetstar brand. Domestic passenger services started on 25 May 2004 using former Impulse Airlines (QantasLink) Boeing 717s on East coast routes. The first international flights started on 1 December 2005. The first service to Perth was on 28 March 2006 by VH-VQJ.
Jetstar standardised its domestic fleet on the Airbus A320 during 2006, and the 717s were withdrawn from service during early 2006. During 2006-7, the airline introduced ex-Qantas Airbus A330-200 aircraft and started long haul international operations from Eastern states airports. From 2008, the airline introduced the Airbus A321. There are other Jetstar affiliate airlines in New Zealand (Jetstar Airways Ltd), Singapore (Jetstar Asia), Vietnam (Jetstar Pacific).
Note: Fleet list below excludes Jetstar's A330s (VH-EBA-EBF & EBJ/K) as these do not currently visit WA. Updated as at 25 Feb 2012.

Aviation was first introduced into the school curriculum at Kent Street Senior High School in 1979. In August 1982, the school purchased its first aircraft - a Cessna 152, VH-WIF. This was the first aircraft bought and operated by a high school in Australia, and was used for student flying and familiarization flights. Flight was introduced to the school curriculum in 1988. The school bought its second aircraft - Cessna 152 VH-LBI in March 1989.
In July 1990, Kent Street Senior High School students began construction of a Hughes Lightwing aircraft. This project was the first of its kind in Australia, and took nearly 4000 student hours to build. It was r unveiled in July 1992 and first flew in September of that year, registered VH-REB. The Lightwing was later sold to help off-set the purchase price of the school's second student built aircraft - a Vans RV-6A aircraft. During 1994, a large aircraft hangar at Jandakot was donated to the school by Albany business woman, Ms Joan Terry, widow of the late Paul Terry.
In May 1999, the Aviation Department purchased a Cessna 172P Skyhawk, VH-HQL. Enabling extended air experience and navigation assessment flights, and providing senior aviation students the opportunity to undertake formal navigational training.
On 4 September 2003, Kent Street Senior High School celebrated the first flight of its second student-built aircraft, Vans RV-6A VH-SHS (the registration stood for Senior High School). Taking some 8,500 student hours and 11,000 rivets to construct, this project provided 150 students with valuable experience in aircraft construction.
During 2004 and 2005, aviation students from Kent Street Senior High School worked collaboratively with third year engineering students from the University of Western Australia to construct another Vans
RV-6A. The inaugural flight of this aircraft occurred during September of 2006. Since late 2006, students have been constructing the school's fourth student-built aircraft - a Vans RV-10.
