Sat 27 Oct 2012: PERTH AIRPORT 361 (JY-JID) Ilyushin IL-76MF (cn 203423808/96-02) of Jordan International Air Cargo On final approach to runway 21 as "RJZ361" from Melbourne at 17:42. The aircraft departed at 19:50 to Colombo, Sri Lanka using the same callsign. This is one of two IL-76MFs which were ordered from the Rosoboronexport company in August 2005, during the MAKS 2005 air show. The aircraft were constructed by Tashkent Aircraft Production Corp (TAPC), in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. However, there were disagreements between TAPC and Rosoboronexport/Ilyushin regarding the terms of the contract and this delayed construction. Ilyushin and TAPC only signed the contract for the two aircraft on 4 July 2007, and in December 2009 a supplementary agreement between Rosoboronexport and Jordan had to be signed, to allow for delayed delivery. The first Il-76MF (construction number 203423808, line number 96-02) was also referred to in some factory documents as an IL-76EI. It was painted in primer and towed to the Tashkent-Vostochny airfield on 17 September 2010, and made its first flight on 30 September 2010. It was painted with serial 76954, in light grey colours with a Russian flag and no titles. It later flew to of the Gromov Flight Research Institute, Zhukovsky in February 2011, where it was painted with the the logos of Jordanian carriers Royal Falcon and JIAC, and registered JY-JID. Flight tests and crew training were completed from Zhukovsky, and the aircraft departed from on its delivery flight to Jordan on 30 June 2011. The aircraft is operated for the Royal Jordanian Air Force and carried additional small "www.RoyalFalcon.com.jo" titles. It was noted at Zhukovski on 22 June 2012 wearing military serial 361 below JY-JID, but now carries only the number 361. Photos © Ian Moy |

Sat 27 Oct 2012: JANDAKOT AIRPORT VH-ZIB Grob G-115C2 (cn 82079/C2) of China Southern WA Flying College Taxying out for a training flight. The College trains pilots for China Southern Airlines from Jandakot and Merredin. This particular aircraft is of interest as it was involved in a mid-air collision with sistership VH-ZIR at Merredin on 18 September 2000, whilst both aircraft were being flown solo by student pilots at low altitude on final approach to the runway. VH-ZIR was struck from above and behind by VH-ZIB Both pilots lost control after the collision - the nose of ZIR pitched steeply upwards and the aircraft became inverted, striking the runway in a nose low attitude. The nose of ZIB pitched downwards with the aircraft landing heavily on the runway on its nose wheel. The pilot of ZIR received minor injuries and was trapped in the cockpit until bystanders lifted the wreckage and helped him clear. The pilot of ZIB was not injured. It is likely that the relative positions of the two aircraft on final approach had prevented the pilot of the higher aircraft from seeing the lower aircraft ahead. Neither pilot had seen the other aircraft prior to the collision occurring. Photo © David Eyre |

A well-known landmark at Jandakot, this Mooney is mounted on a pole at Jandakot Airport, opposite the Royal Flying Doctor Service facilities. It is an engineering experimental prototype Mooney M20H (c/n 1) airframe that had been used for load structural testing at the Mooney factory in Kerrville, Texas. It was donated by Mooney Aircraft to serve as a memorial to Robin Miller, and was transported to Australia aboard a USAF C-141 Starlifter transport aircraft. The memorial was unveiled on 20 May 1978. It was refurbished in January 1999. It is is painted to represent the real VH-REM Mooney M.20E Super 21 (c/n 424), which is still registered, that was formerly used by Robin E. Miller (hence the registration REM). Travelling to remote aboriginal communities, Robin Miller (daughter of the Australian aviation pioneer Horrie Miller) would treat children with Polio vaccine in sugar lumps and became known as "The Sugar Bird Lady". She flew the real VH-REM around WA from September 1968-July 1972. Robin later joined the RFDS at Jandakot, and delivered several aircraft from USA to Australia.
